Rock carvings on The North York Moors |
WHORLTON ..... Whorlton/Near Moor.
An area of heather moorland situated on the Cleveland Hills, at the extreme northwest corner of the NYM's area. The northern edge of the moor drops away abruptly into Teesdale and there are extensive views out over the Tees valley from this point.
Archaeological fieldwork on Near Moor (undertaken
by Godard, Inman and Spratt -1980) recorded an orthostatic
enclosure, along with tumbled boulder walls, numerous cairns and
a cup marked rock. Two very eroded cup and ring marked stones
were also removed from the surface of a cairn and these are now
in the Dorman museum.
Recent visits to Near Moor located the previously reported cup
marked rock ( diagram No.1), while a search of the area further
east located another large cup marked rock (No.2) plus further
small cairns, some containing stones with single cup marks.
