Rock carvings on The North York Moors

UPLEATHAM ..... Errington Wood.

There are several burial mounds on the northern edge of the Upleatham hills and reports dating from the 1970's note a large kerbstone with 19 cupmarks on the E-S-E side of one of these barrows, (apparently this stone is now buried and no longer visible).
On a visit during March 1999, the only visible large stone was a sandstone block (0.85m x 0.75m x 0.25m approx) located on the steep bank on the east side of the barrow where some quarrying/erosion has taken place.
The position of this slab suggests it may have slipped down from the edge of the barrow, and this stone has 6 cup marks with 3 interconnecting grooves along with 3 small areas of pick marks. Pick marks are also visible in the cups.
The exposed upper surface of the stone also has several faint grooves and channels but these may be natural (?).
