Rock carvings on The North York Moors

THIMBLEBY......Over Silton Moor

A short note in the archaeological register for 1977 (YAJ 49) records the discovery on Over Silton moor of a cairn field, walling and a prominent group of boulders, (-one with thirteen cup marks) at SE470944 Approx.
The Ordnance survey map shows that this area is now forested and a recent visit to the area confirmed that the site now lies within dense coniferous forest. The site has probably been much disturbed by the heavy machinery used to plough the moorland prior to planting, however the cup marked boulder could still lay buried beneath the carpet of fallen leaves and branches within the plantation and may be revealed when the trees are felled.
