SNOWDEN
CARR -TREE OF LIFE STONE
Snowden Carr is an area situated on the edge of rough moorland
where the land begins to drop down into the Washburn valley. Over
30 carved rocks have been noted here, along with enclosures and a
cairnfield, -several of the carvings being located among the
cairns. The stone shown here is known locally as the Tree of life
stone. (for more details see folklore and associated beliefs
section).
From Snowden Carr there are extensive views along the Washburn
valley, with the prominent rock outcrop of Almescliffe crags in
the distance, as noted elsewhere this landmark is visible from
several rock carving sites in this region.
DEATH'S HEAD
STONE
Another named carving also known as "the skull" from
the obvious resemblance to a human skull created by the cupmarks
and unusual arrangement of channels.
Other carvings in the area range from simple cup marks to
multiple concentric rings. Some carvings have been damaged
through quarrying, the results can be seen in the picture below
where the left side of the large outcrop has been split off,
losing much of the carving in the process.
