Rock Carvings on the North York Moors

Raven Hall - Ravenscar

In the Archaelogia journal Vol 52 (1890) Canon Greenwell reported his excavation of several barrows on the moors in Fylingdales parish, he also noted that eight cup and ring marked stones were to be found in the garden of Peak House, at Ravenscar on the east coast. Some of these stone were said to have been taken from barrows near the hall.

Peak House is now known as The Raven Hall Hotel, and after hearing of Canon Greenwell's reference, Frank James and Steve Hesketh (both of who live in the area) made enquiries which led to the reporting of this fine carving which is built into a wall in the hotel garden.
Shallow pecking on the rock surface has created a design with a small central cup mark surrounded by three concentric circles, while the ends of the circles form a pattern similar to the 'Comb' like motif found on a boulder on Brow Moor (1.5 miles further inland) .
