Quantum cup and ring marks!

Using a scanning/tunneling electron microscope, Don Eigler and colleagues at the IBM laboratories in Almadan xx USA have captured amazing images of the atomic landscape and its quantum states.

This image on the IBM website shows two defect points (possibly impurity atoms) on a copper surface, the rings around the defects are standing waves created by surface electrons forming a quantum-mechanical interference pattern.

Check these IBM website links for more information and images on this fascinating research.
