Yorkshire Rock Art

Ilkley Moor (West Yorkshire)
(Pictures by Andy Hemingway)

Andy Hemingway's interest in prehistory has taken him to many ancient sites around the UK. This page shows just a few images from a selection he kindly provided, and illustrates some of the rock art he has noted on his rambles over Ilkley Moor.
(These pictures were taken earlier this year  in the Spring of 2003).

See also Andy Hemingway's website which features examples of his artwork based on the some of the Ilkley moor Rock art.

The picture on the right shows detail of the carving on the huge rock outcrop known as the Hangingstones.

Another detail from the Hangingstones.

The large Cup-and-Ring marked boulder known as the Badgerstone, overlooking the Wharfe Valley, suggests that it was the rock and its location that attracted the people who carved the symbols upon it.

Detail from the Badgerstone showing the unfinished flyfot/swastika symbol.
