Rock carvings on The North York Moors

WESTERDALE ..... Hograh Moor.

In his survey of Stones on the North York Moors Stanhope White (1) noted 2 cup marks on a stone which maybe part of a cairn on Little Hograh Moor. These cup marks are very eroded but look "genuine", while other nearby rocks have rough circular marks probably caused by being used for target practice. The distinctive peak of Roseberry Topping can be seen on the skyline from this stone/cairn.
Further to the west, R. Close (2) reported finding a cup marked stone on Holiday Hill, but in the following year it was reported as been "obscured". The carving was photographed and drawn, but this record have not been traced at present.
Visits to Holiday Hill have failed to locate any carved stones.
