Cup and ring marked rocks occur across the
Yorkshire region but the distribution appears to fade out on its
western border, however work by J.A. Heginbottom (Prehistoric
rock art of Upper Calderdale and the surrounding area (1977) -
details in the YAS library) uncovered a small number of rock
carvings in Calderdale, the Pennine border region between
Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Paul Bennett of Hebden Bridge has followed up this work and
although the carvings consist mainly of cup marks, more complex
examples may await discovery.
The two examples shown below are (1) the Winter
Hill stone (SD983 419) near the Hitchin stone and (2)from the Widdop moor SD925
335 (Midgley moor SE009 303).
