Rock carvings in western Yorkshire |
ELLERS WOOD
Six carved rocks have been found in a small piece of woodland on
the banks of the river Washburn. This is an unusual location for
cup and ring carved stones and there is a possibility that this
site and others along the higher ground to the north of the river
Wharfe may suggest some kind of ancient routeway. The Ellers wood
carvings could mark the crossing point on the river Washburn with
the route heading east towards the Little Almescliffe area where
barrows and a settlement have been recorded.
The large cup marked boulder shown below was discovered on a visit to Ellers Wood in 1992, it appears that no one had noticed it even though it is located only 20 metres from the known group of rock carvings.
