Rock carvings in western Yorkshire |
ASKWITH
& DENTON MOOR
These areas along with Middleton moor and Snowden Carr form a
large expanse of open moorland, divided only by the Otley to
Blubberhouses road. This road appears to have been built through
the cairnfield noted on Snowden Carr, as low cairns and rock
carvings continue across onto Askwith moor. The carvings here
consist mainly of simple cup marks, but this unique(?) carving
has been noted which may represent a stylised human figure. Very
similar designs are found in Spain and Hawaii, where suggested
interpretations include a hunter displaying a bow or a deity
holding the ends of a rainbow.
As a
result of his field work at many sites during the 1960's, Stuart
Feather (see references page) noted that groups of rocks carved
with complex motifs would often have nearby, another group of
rocks carved only with simple cupmarks. This appears to be the
case between the two areas of complex carvings at Snowden Carr
and Middleton moor. The stone shown here is typical of the
simpler carvings in this area.
