St Wilfrid's Well - Ripon
(SE 3085 7102)

St Wilfrid's Well is located at the side of the road called Skellbank, to the west of Ripon town centre.
St Wilfrid was active in this region in the 7th century and sided with the Church of Rome against the native Celtic Church. The crypt in Ripon cathedral is thought to be from his early church, which was partly constructed from re-used Roman masonry. (possibly brought by river from York). The crypt also contains St Wilfrid's Needle, (see Odinsberg Spring for details).
On a visit to the well in Sept 99, there was no water flowing, however the trough was around half full, so there maybe a problem with the water source? A stone spout above the trough would normally convey the water from the spring, probably located in the banking behind the well.
The well now appears tidy and looked after, but back in 1988 it was reported as being full of litter.

In Jan 2000 water was again flowing into the trough from the spout, see bigger picture.

Access - The well is located by the roadside.
Condition - Good, but water supply can be intermittent?
