Wareholes Well - Kirby Overblow
(SE 3132 4953)

Wareholes Well is located on a uncultivated hillside 3/4 of a mile to the north-west of Kirby Overblow.
The well is mentioned in the 1576 perambulation of the Forest of Knaresborough boundary, when it was recorded as Warehellywell in Warholes close. As in other cases the wells name has gradually changed from holy to helly to holes.
Unfortunately this well has suffered over recent years, the first time we saw it, the area in front of the stone bath had a cobbled surface, but since then the cobbles have been dug out to allow a rusty metal tank to be filled by water diverted from the spring.
On a visit during May 99 the whole well looked to have disappeared, but it was actually totally hidden by dense undergrowth (this picture is from several years previous), the bath was empty but a trickle of water still flowed from the spring outlet. The large stone trough suggests this was once an important well even though it is quite a distance from any farms or houses, so perhaps it was used for healing baths?

Access - A path leads from the village and passes the hillside where the well is located.
Condition - Neglected and very overgrown, but the water still flows.
