Sulphur Well - Salton
(SE 7160 8006)

On a visit to this well in 1997 there was no water in the trough and it was suspected that the well had fallen victim to the lowering of the water table in the area, but happily in July 1999 a steady supply of water was flowing into the stone lined chamber, while a white mineral deposit and a strong "eggy" smell were also present.

The lady at the farm next to the well said that the water sometimes stops flowing in really hot weather. It was also a suprise to hear that the sulphur spring is also part of the water supply for the farm house and the stock on the farm. Even though the water has a strong sulphur content, they have got used to the taste, plus the water, once boiled makes an excellent cup of tea!

In the past the water has been used for medicinal purposes and a local doctor used to regularly stop and fill a bottle from the well.
It was suggested (with a grin?) that we should try the water fresh from the spring and so with some hesitation a cupped handful was drunk, but once in the mouth the sulphur taste and smell was so intense it was impossible to swallow the water.

Access - Located on the roadside grass verge in the village (follow your nose!).
Condition - No change over the last ten years. although it has occasionally stopped flowing.
