Yorkshire Holy Wells

St Simon's Well - Caldbergh
(SE 0858 8492).

This holy well should be in the North Yorkshire 'top ten', for its location and setting in tranquil woodland alongside the river Cover. A footpath descends the hillside on stone flagged steps, leading past St Simon's ford and the tumbled walls of a 14th century chapel dedicated to St Simon and St Jude. A few yards further west the path passes St Simon's Well and then continues on to cross the river via St Simon's Bridge heading towards Melmerby.

The first edition OS map shows a small rectangular structure on the site of St Simon's Well and the remains of this can still be seen in the thin stone slabs set on edge around part of the pool. These slabs are likely to have formed an enclosure that would hold the water and create a shallow bath. The actual spring source maybe a little way behind the well, with the water flowing in a covered channel to emerge from the right-hand opening seen in the picture. The water then flows into the river.

Since our visit in 1999 a small cairn has been built in the stream, perhaps by passing walkers or other visitors to the well.

Access - The well is located by a footpath (signposted for St Simon's Bridge) off the Middleham to Caldbergh road (narrow!).
Condition - Excellent. no real change since our visit in 1988. (Last Visit Nov 2006)
