The Roman's Well - Cawthorne
(SE 7822 9056)

This strong spring emerges at the foot of a wooded bank and then flows a short distance to fill an old brick built chamber, the overflow then runs off into a nearby stream after passing through a clump of rhododendron bushes (how did they get here?).
Knox's 1825 map of this area marks this spring as "Catholic well" which suggests this was a holy well connected with the Roman Catholic community in this region. This seems more likely than the suggestion of a link with the nearby roman road or the earthworks on the ridge to the east.

Back in the 1989 the well chamber was very overgrown, but in May 2000 it was tidy and seemed as if some one has been looking after the well (another mystery well guardian?).

(check for Whellan reference?)

Access - The well is near a public footpath through an area of woodland.
Condition - Very good, but the bushes are beginning to encroach on the well chamber.
