St Robert's Well - Levisham
(SE 8402 9029)

More than a dozen strong springs break out at the foot of a steep hillside to the south east of Levisham village and one of the springs is marked as St Robert's Well on the OS map. however on our original visit back in 1989 it was impossible to definitely identify which spring was to be regarded as the holy well.
On another visit in May 2000 one of the springs was found to have been marked with a painted sign which read "St Robert's Well", however this spring appears to be a little too far to the east compared to the one marked on the OS map. This spring may have been identified by someone with local knowledge or it may have been a 'best guess' at locating the well.

At the approximate location of the holy well (as marked on the OS map) there is a recess where a strong spring falls onto a low rock shelf, this could be the the site named on the map, but further work is required to definitely identify which spring was regarded as the holy well. A larger scale map may show more detail or enquires made to find out who placed the sign.

St Robert was originally a monk at Whitby in the 12th century so this may explain the dedication of the well. See St Robert of Knaresborough.

garlic? Felt like hillside collapsing.

Access - The well is near a public footpath, but is difficult to reach from the uphill side and over boggy ground from below.
Condition -
Well site needs confirming, but a potent setting for a holy well.
