Yorkshire Holy Wells |
|
||
At the approximate location of the holy well (as marked on the OS map) there is a recess where a strong spring falls onto a low rock shelf, this could be the the site named on the map, but further work is required to definitely identify which spring was regarded as the holy well. A larger scale map may show more detail or enquires made to find out who placed the sign. St Robert was originally a monk at Whitby in the 12th
century so this may explain the dedication of the well. See St
Robert of Knaresborough. garlic? Felt like hillside collapsing. |
Access - The well is near a public footpath, but
is difficult to reach from the uphill side and over boggy ground from
below. Condition - Well site needs confirming, but a potent setting for a holy well. |
