Mary Magdelene Well - (SE 7228 9040)

This spring is located at the bottom of a steep bank that drops away on the north side of the road between Hutton Le Hole and Lastingham. The spring flows into a small iregular shaped trough formed by stone slabs. Directly above the trough is a flat stone which has the words "MARY MAGDELENE WELL" and a cross, carved upon it. How the well came by this dedication is not known at present but it is probably part of the Lastingham group.
In 1956 the Scarborough Archaeological society cleaned out the well and found several pieces of medieval pottery dating from the 12th century.

Access - The well is located by the roadside.
Condition - Good, no change since our visit in 1988.
