Yorkshire Holy Wells

Lady Well  - Kirklington
(SE 3162 8143)

This Holy well may have had a long history as it is located next the lost medieval village of Yarnwick, where only the site of the moated hall survives. However the present well house is of a more recent 'industrial' red brick construction, with a arched brick roof and a concrete covering. The well is totally dry and all that remains inside are the rusting remnants of a pump/siphoning system, which probably supplied the hall nearby.
At one time there may have been a more traditional well on the site, but the spring head has been dug out and this brick lined reservoir built to hold the water. A similar fate has occurred to the Lady well near Pateley Bridge.

Access - The well house is by a public footpath.
Condition - Very poor, a dry well with a derelict well house.
