Holy Well - Near Moor, Whorlton
(SE 4855 9885)

This well was noted whist browsing the OS maps and it is simply marked as 'Holy Well' (in Holy Well Gill). There is very little to see at this natural spring except where the water flows away and the moss is stained by the iron content in the water. This chalybeate property may have led to the waters use for healing purposes and the spring being regarded as a holy well. If this was the case the water must have been very effective as the spring is in an isolated location, a good distance out onto the moors and quite a trek from the nearest village.
Nearby the well are the remains of a prehistoric field system dating back to the Bronze age and it is probable that this spring provided a source of water for those people 4000 years ago.

Access - The well is located on open moorland with a track to the north.
Condition - The spring head is choked by vegetation, but the water still flows.
