St Hilda's Well - Aislaby
(NZ 8429 0860)

Knox's 1821 map shows a Hilda Well on Aislaby moor, unfortunately it is not marked on the modern OS maps. Pat O'halloran checked the area and found this oblong shaped pool among the birch scrub that now covers much of the moor.
Originally the Lady Hilda's Beck flowed from the well but today the beck starts at a lower level on the valley side.

This pool could be the spring/well mentioned by Charlton ....
"A large spring or well near Swarthoue cross where she (St Hilda) used to resort when young, afterwards assumed her name"

However there is also a covered reservoir to the north of this pool and this might also have been the site of the well.

L. Charlton, A History of Whitby and of Whitby Abbey. 1779
Check mention in Whellan  p821 vol 2

Access - The pool is among the birch scrub due south of the parking area off the A .
