St
Helen's Well - Kirkby Overblow
(SE 3238 4290)
St Helen's Well is located by the roadside on the west side of the
village. The well is in a recess at the end of a short passage, where
the water collects in the bottom of the chamber and topped up by a small
trickle of water from the spring in the bank behind the well. In wet
weather the area in front of the chamber is liable to flood, but this is
likely to be run-off from the sloping bank above.
All Saints church, with its St Helen's chapel, is just to the east of
the well and the church guide suggests the church site with its healing
well and the prominent rock outcrop of Almescliffe Crags further west,
could have been locally important sacred sites in pre-Christian times.
Wareholes Well, could also be
part of this group as it is located near a footpath from the church,
which heads west towards the crags.
