Halley Keld Spring - Sawdon
(SE 9387 8603)

This well is located at the bottom of a steep wooded hillside, 3/4 of a mile to the north of Sawdon village. The well was originally visited in 1988, but its exact site was unclear. Another visit In June 1999 found it to be a natural spring bubbling up among the undergrowth at the foot a banking, with sufficient water flowing to form a small stream.
Halley Keld is the Old English term for a holy well so this would suggest the spring has a long history.

The excavation of two burial mounds on the land to the south of this holy spring, found evidence of Neolithic activity on the site, and it was suggested that the site may have been chosen because of the reliable water source provided by the spring.
