St Cuthbert's Well (Cuddy Keld) - Scorton
(SE 2509 0151)

Some excellent news regarding St Cuthbert's well. In the spring of 2006 Wendy Bannon, got in contact to say that the well structure had been renovated and restored by the Scorton parish council. Wendy's photograph (on right) shows the well after the restoration work was completed, and all those involved should be congratulated on the fine result.
In 1999 the well structure was virtually derelict (see pic below), but around this time Mrs Bannon wrote to the parish council to suggest that they might take on the restoration of St Cuthbert's well as a centenary project. Thankfully they agreed and the decision effectively saved the well from becoming a total ruin.

Although the structure was in very poor shape in 1999, the well had a good depth of clear water in it, and the water level was above that of the stream to the north. However in 1988 the well was almost dry, which suggests the supply is intermittent, so lets hope the water source stabilises now that the site is no longer neglected.

St Cuthbert's
is a classic holy well, with its keyhole shape and steps leading down to the water, plus the grand roof, indicating that in the past people regarded this as a significant site. Now that the holy well has been restored, it must be counted among the "top ten" in North Yorkshire.
