Cropton Draw Well - Cropton
(SE 7564 8898)

This raised platform covers the shaft of Cropton village Well. A sign by the well states that it is 300ft deep, but the shaft was capped around 1920, probably after piped water was provided in the village.
The wells reputation before this date was that it provided the best water in the district.

The water was lifted by buckets on an endless rope system and in 1988 the remains of the winding gear were found and restored to the site.

The following rhyme may link the village cross to the well ........

'On Cropton cross there is a Cup
And in that cup there is a sup
Take that cup and drink that sup
And set the cup on Cropton cross top'
