This raised platform covers the shaft of Cropton village
Well. A sign by the well states that it is 300ft deep, but the shaft was
capped around 1920, probably after piped water was provided in the
village. The water was lifted by buckets on an endless rope system and in 1988 the remains of the winding gear were found and restored to the site. The following rhyme may link the village cross to the well ........
