St Oswald's Spring - Hotham
(SE 8915 3548 site of )

The Rev. Smith makes a brief note in his book that the village of Hotham once had a St Oswald's Well, which was shown on old tithe maps. Checking the 1850's OS map for the area shows a St Oswald's Spring marked alongside a field road which runs to the north of Hotham church (St Oswald's). The modern OS map does not show the spring, but a small pond is marked at the same location.
A visit to the area in July 2000 failed to find any water source at the site. The old OS map shows a stream flowing from the spring, heading eastwards across fields but this had also gone and it is likely that St Oswald's spring and another spring in the field have been piped into the field drainage system.

Interestingly St Oswald's well appears to have been a marker point on the Hotham parish boundary line, suggesting its local importance.

Access - the site of the well is by a footpath.
Condition - Lost at present - possibly piped into field drainage.
Any dowsers care to check the site?
