St Oswald's Spring - Hotham The Rev. Smith makes a brief note in his
book that the village of Hotham once had a St Oswald's Well, which was
shown on old tithe maps. Checking the 1850's OS map for the area shows a
St Oswald's Spring marked alongside a field road which runs to the north
of Hotham church (St Oswald's). The modern OS map does not show the
spring, but a small pond is marked at the same location. Interestingly St Oswald's well appears to
have been a marker point on the Hotham parish boundary line, suggesting
its local importance. |
Access - the site of the well is by a footpath. Condition - Lost at present - possibly piped into field drainage. Any dowsers care to check the site? |
