St Laurence's Well - Sigglethorne
(TA 153 461 approx site of?)

Sigglesthorne church is dedicated to St Laurence and the Rev Smith describes a St Laurence's well to the north of the church, alongside the Catwick road. The well was known locally as the Lowry Well and consisted of a narrow well shaft built of rough stone, around 5 feet deep, with the water being drawn up by a hand pump.  The hand pump was not working when the Rev Smith tried it, although he was told that at one time the well was used by the whole village. Apparently the quantity of water flowing into the well was such that it could not be emptied, and the overflow was piped away underground. Before the well shaft was built up, the strong spring used to fill a trough and  pool before flowing away tojoin the Catfoss beck.

The well is not marked on the modern OS maps and a quick check along the roadside in June 2000  failed to locate the well, if indeed it still exists. However St Laurence's Well is marked on the 1850's OS map so a further visit is planned.
