Lady Spring - Warter
(SE 8690 4983)

One mile to the east of the Nunburnholme Lady well there is a Lady Spring marked on the OS map. This Holy well is located in the neighbouring parish of Warter, which like Nunburnholme also has the site of a priory (Augustinian), located half a mile to the north of the Lady Spring. There are no other details regarding this spring at present, but it is easy to picture the two priory's competing for holy well pilgrims.

Unfortunately the Lady Spring has been 'improved' (why?) and is now piped a few metres from its natural outflow. Hopefully the picture shows the large volume of water flowing from this spring head. Several other springs emerge nearby but it looks as if the most abundant spring was chosen and dedicated to 'Our Lady'.
In its natural state the spring would have flowed from the chalky rubble at the foot of a steep banking as the nearby Ludhill spring does. Until recently the hill side was wooded with mature trees so the site would have been quite scenic.

Access - Difficult - there are no footpaths and a stream has to be crossed.
Condition - Nothing to show that this was probably once a revered holy well.
