St Helen's well - Goodmanham
(SE 8910 4242)

St Helen's well is located alongside a footpath leading off the Wolds Way, which passes through the valley below the well.
The spring rises on a hillslope and flows from a cleft beneath the roots of an old Elder tree, the water is then channeled into a shallow, triangular shaped concrete 'bath' before being piped away down the hillside.
In YHWSS It was suggested that this unusual 'bath' may have been used for healing purposes, but the proximity of the dis-used railway line lower down the hill, raises the possibility that the well water may have been collected and piped to the trackside for use by the steam trains in days gone by.
Whatever its past use, the well is in a peaceful wooded location, with easy access and there is even a bench provided for weary travelers to rest by the well.

Access - The well is alongside a footpath.
Condition - Excellent, with a good flow of water.
