Drummer Boy Pond - North Frodingham
(possibly TA 0941 5302?)

In connection with the Drummer's Well at Harpham, the Rev Smith also noted that N. Frodingham has a Drummer Boy Pond ....
".......now both weedy and dirty, situated in a grass field not far from the road running from the village to Wansford. Its tradition is not very clear, A drummer boy was marching with an army - date unknown - he stopped to get a drink from the pond, accidentally fell in and was drowned, and so at times he beats his drum in the pond."

Checking the OS map shows a small pond next to the road and another one in the corner of a field about 150yds from the road, which fits better with Smith's description. A visit to the village in June 2000 showed the pond next to the road no longer exists, but the pond in the field corner is still there. A footpath leads from the village to this pond which is very "weedy" and at present it is totally surrounded by a hawthorn hedge (see pic). An old gent who has lived in the village for over eighty years had no recollection of a Drummer boys Pond so there is no definite proof that this is the right pond. The next step is to check the older OS maps to see if it has a name.

Access - The pond is alongside a footpath, but it is surrounded by an overgrown hedge.
Condition - Still to confirm that this is the Drummer Boy Pond.
